Program Notes

Dutch composer Jacob Ter Veldhuis writes many works for solo instrument accompanied by soundtrack. Billie is one example of these compositions based entirely on the life and voice of Billie Holiday, a famous African American jazz vocalist. Ter Veldhuis uses recorded fragments of Holiday’s voice from various interviews throughout her career. Her speech is paired with a prerecorded accompaniment that complements the saxophone part. Billie depicts hardships of Holiday’s life, and references a fragment of one of her famous songs, Strange Fruit.
