Short Symphony (2007)

I began writing Short Symphony in October of 2007 just after my wife and I had returned from an artists residency in Costa Rica; my initial strategy being that after a month of solid work I would be ready to tackle such a large project. After our return however we were both a bit tired, the details of daily life began to creep in, and Short Symphony began to emerge slowly even arduously from jottings of the previous month. I worked continuously through October to complete it by the middle of November spending many days reconciling mental images of the work and their translation to the page.

My primary aim in composing this work was to create a continuously developmental form shaped by gradual changes in its underlying material so that its "sound" quality changes slowly as the work shapes and, reshapes events of the musical surface. You might imagine this work as a journey where sweeping vistas exhibit the same general shape and the road underfoot is always distinctly different.

I would like to take a moment to acknowledge those who offered the assistance necessary to complete this work. First of all to Şőlen Dikener who encouraged me to write it and who has always been a supporter of my work, to the WV Commission on the Arts, and Marshall University without whose support I would not have had the time or resources to undertake a piece of this scale, to faculty colleagues for preparing parts and performing with the orchestra, and to the orchestra for approaching a new and challenging work with integrity.
