About the Young People's Competition Winner

Sesil Dikener was born in Ankara, Turkey in 1994 into a musical family. Her parents were music faculty at a college in Ankara. The following year, they moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan, where Sesil started her musical education at the age of 3½. Sesil participated in the Suzuki music program playing the cello, and later, at age 6, she started to play piano with her mother.

In 2002, Sesil moved to Huntington and graduated from Cammack Elementary School. In 6th grade, she received a writing award. In 7th grade, she went to the state Social Studies Fair Finals with her anthropological project. In the same year, Sesil was selected to be a member of the Honor Society at her school. Sesil has a big interest in acting in plays. She has participated in plays to include Oliver (in Michigan), Les Miserables, and Gypsy.

During the summer of 2007, Sesil worked as a translator at the international music camp Academy Datça in Turkey. She also took cello lessons and played in orchestras. She has traveled frequently to Turkey and has been to Spain and Canada.

Her future plans include graduating from Huntington High School and an out-of-state college where she plans to study interior design. She hopes to run her own business on the coast. Her dreams are to live on the seashore, travel the world, and run a successful business.

Sesil currently is an 8th grader at Huntington Middle School; studies piano with Dr. Leslie Petteys; and, cello with her father at Marshall University. She plays cello in the Marshall University Orchestra and takes dance classes from Elite Performance Academy.

MU Symphony Orchestra would like to thank Dr. Ed Bingham for his, support and the Woman's Club of Huntington for their contributions to, produce the Young People's Concert in its forty-seventh season.
