About the Conductors

Robert T. (Tommy) Thompson

Thompson was a high school band director 1969-1999 at various schools including Ft. Gay High School, Hurricane High School, Vinson High School, & Spring Valley High School. He served as interim director of the Marshall University Marching Thunder from 2000-2002 and .served as .a drill writer for 2002-2003. He also directed the MU Symphonic Band during his time at Marshall. Currently, He is a Marching and Concert Adjudicator and Director of the Greater Huntington Symphonic Band.

Dr. Richard Lemke

Richard Lemke is Professor Music Emeritus at Marshall University. He taught at Marshall University for 25 years before retiring in 2001. He served as Director of Bands at Marshall University from 1976-1991, and was Professor of Music Education from 1991-2001. He also served as Director of Bands at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania for four years, graduate assistant in bands at The University of Iowa for two years, and was the band director at high schools in Paoli and Princeton, Indiana. He was President of the West Virginia Music Educators Association (1999-2001) and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Southern Division of M.E.N.C. for four years. In 2001 he was made an Honorary Kentucky Colonel for his work with M.E.N.C. He has judged concert and marching band contests/festivals in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. He has studied arranging with Bill Moffit and Tom Davis. He has written over 500 marching band arrangements, a dozen concert band arrangements, and designed marching band contest shows for bands in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Mississippi, and West Virginia.

Dr. Dwayne Sagen

Sagen is Director of Bands as well as Assistant Dean for Admissions and Adjunct Professor of Music at the Blair School of Music Vanderbilt University Nashville, TN. Dr. Sagen earned a Bachelor of Music in Education and a Masters of Music from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. He earned his PhD in Music Education-from The University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA. His experience includes being Instructor of Music, Henderson State University, AK; Assistant Director Bands, Associate Professor of Music, and Chairman of Music Department, University of Mississippi, Oxford, MS.

He is a member of College Band Directors National Association, Music Educators National Conference, The National Band Association, was elected to Phi Beta Mu· National Band Directors Honorary, Tennessee Bandmasters Association, Tennessee Music Educators Association, American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Tau Beta Sigma, Kappa Kappa Psi, and Rotary International.

He is a featured Clinician, Guest conductor, Adjudicator of Marching Band and Concert Band Festivals, High School All-State Bands and Regional Honor Bands throughout the United States and Canada. He also has authored papers and articles on instrumental music education as well as serving as a Guest Speaker and Presenter of College Admissions and Audition Workshops at music conventions like the Mid West Clinic in Chicago and various High Schools throughout the country.
