Program Notes
"In the beginning was Noise. And Noise begat Rhythm. And Rhythm begat everything else. " - Mickey Hart

Virginia Tate
Mr. Smadbeck has written several works and etudes for the marimba and this new work has been compared to his most popular work Rhythm Song. In 1995, Smadbeck was invited to Wichita State University to perform his popular Rhythm Song with students at WSU . The invitation renewed his interest in composing (he had not composed since 1991), and, as a result, Virginia Tate was premiered during his visit Using a recording from Smadbeck's performance in Wichita, Kevin Bobo, still a student at WSU, transcribed, performed, and recorded the piece on his 1998 album Marimba Jambalaya (with permission from Smadbeck), propelling it into stardom before its publication in 1999. The piece is named after Smadbeck's wife's mother, who passed away tragically in 1986 at the age of 52.
Udu Dances
The word Udu means both pottery and peace in the Ibo language of Nigeria. The Ibo people believe the deep haunting sound particular to the drum is the "voice of the ancestors" when used in religious ceremonies. It is made entirely of clay and the design is based on water vessels. The pot was initially used for carrying water; Abang mbre (pot for playing) was the original name ascribed to the drum. Each movement, or "dance", incorporates rhythms typically found in each representative location.
Night Sketches - I. Crickets
Kevin Bobo is currently Professor of Percussion at the University of Indiana and is in demand world-wide as a performer, composer, and clinician. Crickets is a programmatic work based on a poem by his wife Emily. Using minimalism and neo-classic techniques, Bobo musically captures the implication of the title. This work is the most virtuosic of Mr. Bobo's published compositions to date.
In The Valley of the Kings
In the Valley of the Kings was written expressively for the 1998 PAS Composition Contest in which it received 2nd place. Erickson's intention for the piece was to expose the timpani as a melodic instrument and compose in the same manner as a solo marimba work. The idea for the work was derived from the composer's interest in ancient Egyptian culture. Unique performance techniques include playing on the bowls, in the center of the heads, clicking mallets together, one-handed brush rolls, and fingertip rolls.
Uneven Souls (Sta Vidils II)
Uneven Souls is a piece whose title reflects the character of the Balkans and their "uneven" souls - souls that are free from any "strict rules", any "ultimatums", or any "square, even" way of behaving according to Zivkovic. The rhythms in this piece are Based mostly on uneven beats like 7/8, 11/8, and especially 13/8 in the last section of the piece. The composition consists of three parts, one fading into the other. Singing is also an important part of this work, since singing at work, in fields, or at home is an important part of every day Balkan life.
