This recital is presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Master of Fine Arts degree in performance. Mr. Chapman is a student in the piano studio of Dr. Sean Parsons.

Program Notes

My Romance is a popular Jazz tune was written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. It was created for Billy Rose's 1935 musical, Jumbo. It has been covered by many popular jazz artists such as Art Blakey, Gary Burton, and Bill Evans. A recent recording can be heard on Chris Botti's album When I Fall in Love, released in 2004.

Dolphin Dance is an original composition by Herbie Hancock recorded on his album Maiden Voyage in 1965. The original musicians were Herbie Hancock (piano), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), George Coleman (alto saxophone), Ron Carter (bass), and Tony Williams (drums). A recent recording of this tune can be heard on Christian McBride's Fingerpainting: The Music of Herbie Hancock released in 1997.

Summertime is an aria which was composed by George Gershwin for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. This tune is considered one, of the most widely covered tunes in popular music. One of the most remembered recordings of this tune features Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong on the recording Porgy and Bess in 1957. A recent recording of this tune can be heard Fantasia Barinno's album Free Yourself released in 2004.

I Thought about You was written by Johnny Mercer and Jimmy Van Heusen in 1939 and recorded by Frank Sinatra on the album Songs for Swingin Lovers! In 1955. This tune was also covered by Miles Davis on Someday My Prince Will Come in 1961. A recent rendition of this tune can be heard on the US Army Blues Jazz Ensemble album Things Ain't What They Used To Be released in 2006.

Quintessence is the title track of Quincy Jones album Quintessence released in 1961. Quintessence means: "The pure, highly concentrated essence of a thing, the purest or most typical instance." This tune was also covered by the Coleman Hawkins. recording Today and Now in 1963. A recent recording can be heard on the album Basie and Beyond: The Quincy Jones - Sammy Nestico Orchestra released in 2000.

Someday My Prince will Come is the title track of a Miles Davis album recorded in 1961 featuring the Miles Davis (trumpet), John Coltrane (tenor saxophone), Hank Mobley (tenor saxophone), Wynton Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Jimmy Cobb (drums). The original tune came from Walt Disney's animation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It was written by Larry Morey and Frank Churchill. A more recent recording of this tune can be heard on Cassandra Wilson's Traveling Miles released in 1999.

Sonnymoon for Two is an original song by the legendary tenor saxophone player Sonny Rollins. This tune was featured on the album Night at the Village Vanguard in 1957. This song is based on a 12-bar blues. A recent recording of this tune can be heard on Dexter Gordon's Stella by Starlight released in 2005.

Armando's Rhumba is an original composition by Chick Corea featured on his album My Spanish Heart in 1976. This song featured Jean Luc Ponty (Violin) and Chick Corea (Piano) as soloists. Supporting musicians were Stanley Clarke acoustic bass) and Michael Narada Walden (Hand Clapping). A more recent recording of this tune can be heard on Michel Camile's Thru My Eyes released in 1996.
