Equinox - Theodore A. Rose, II

Focus [Electro-acoustic music] - Robert Hage
The main sound materials for Focus are a recorded saxophone multi-phonic and saxophone key clicks that provide non-pitched sounds. When extended, the saxophone multi-phonic evoke timelessness and thoughts of eastern meditation practices. As the name suggests, Focus encourages the listener to immerse him or herself in the sound and to focus on the different aspects of that sound, leading to a state of mind away from the individual self. Throughout the work different aspects of the multi-phonic emerge very gradually, so as not to disrupt the dominance of the multi-phonic sound through elaborate gestures and changes. Eventually, the multi-phonic is overtaken by the noise and rhythmic elements of the key clicking sound and rectify harmonic effect added to the sound. When seen as a whole structure the work should give the impression of a rotating sphere of sound that slowly brings into focus different aspects of that sound to the listener.
Robert Hage is a senior music composition major studying with Dr. Zanter. Several of his compositions have been performed on previous Composers Recitals, including Declarations and Dialogues (solo trumpet), Discontinuity (saxophone quartet) and Fluctuations (clarinet duet).
Dunmer Sonatina - Jeffrey R. Blair
The Dunmer, also known as Dark Elves, are mysterious and mischievous creatures. Although unhappier than their High Elf cousins, they take joy in their mischief, a lighter side to their dramatic dark history.
Jeffrey Blair is a sophomore composition major studying with Dr. Zanter, and his principal instrument is trombone. His interests include Roman history, classical warfare, and fantasy stories.
Rise and Fall - Eric Akers
Rise and Fall is based upon a set of simple melodic themes which are heard often in their entirety and are passed, from instrument to instrument. The piece contains three sections: fast, slow; fast. The slow section features the main themes from the fast section, played by different instruments simultaneously.
Eric Akers is a second year graduate student studying with Dr. Onofrio. Akers received undergraduate degree from MU in music education and composition. He currently is the choir director at West Middle school in Huntington, WV.
