Approximately twenty-five percussionists and their conductor, Cort McClaren, make up the three percussion ensembles at UNCG. Consisting of a unique, blend of talented musicians ranging from freshman to doctoral students, the group captures the essence of contemporary percussion music.

The UNCG Percussion Ensemble has also distinguished itself by performing many commissions, premieres, and recordings. The ensemble recorded Philip Parker's Concertino for Trumpet and Percussion, with Dr. Edward Bach, trumpet professor at UNCG and Daniel McCarthy's Song of Middle Earth for solo percussion and percussion ensemble With Danny Frye, soloist.

Additionally, the UNCG Percussion Ensemble has also recorded a CD entitled Sketches which includes Philip Parker's Sketches for Alto Saxophone and Percussion Orchestra, Marek's Sonata for Marimba Quartet, and Parker's Five Pieces for Clarinet and Percussion Ensemble with Dr. Kelly Burke.

The ensemble was selected to perform at the 1994 Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Atlanta, Georgia and in 1998 in Orlando, Florida for a new music reading session where the ensemble premiered works by David Gillingham, Daniel McCarthy, and David J. Long. The ensemble performs annually at the North Carolina Day of Percussion and has appeared at several National Conferences on Percussion Pedagogy.
