ABOUT THE CONDUCTORS
LIEUTENANT COLONEL STEVEN GRIMO, Commander of the United States Air Force Academy Band, entered the Air Force in January, 1986. Upon completion of Officer Training School, he was assigned as Deputy Commander and Assistant Conductor of the 539th Air Force Band of the West: His success in that assignment led to selection as Executive Officer and Vice Commander of the United States Air Force Band in Washington, D.C. While in Washington, Lieutenant Colonel Grimo was the Officer in Charge of the USAF Ceremonial Brass and the Airmen of Note. He returned to Texas as Commander of the United States Air Force Band of the West. In October 1998, Grimo became Commander of the United States Air Force Band of the Pacific in Anchorage, Alaska. In July of 2001, he became the commander of the USAF of Mid-America at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. On July 16, 2004, he assumed Command of the USAF Academy Band, Colorado Springs, Colorado.
A native of Bristol, RI, Grimo began music studies as a percussionist, earning the B.M. degree in Music Education and Percussion Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. A veteran public school teacher, Grimo has taught at the elementary, junior high and high school levels. Grimo received the M.M. degree in Wind Ensemble conducting from the New England Conservatory for Music, and the D.M.A. degree in conducting from the Catholic University of America Lieutenant Colonel Grimo has numerous published works to his credit and is a nationally active guest conductor and clinician. He has received the National Band Association's Citation of Excellence, and the Stanbury Award of the American School Band Director's Association.
DR STEPHEN LAWSON joined the Marshall University faculty as Associate Professor of Horn in the fall of 2002. He teaches horn, music theory and music education courses, and conducts the MU Wind Symphony. He is a member of the Kingsbury Woodwind Quintet, MU Faculty Brass Quintet, and performs occasionally on piano with Bluetrane, the faculty jazz ensemble. Lawson also performs with the West Virginia Symphony, Huntington Symphony, River Cities Symphony and Ohio Valley Symphony. An active recitalists, many of his programs have included performances on historical and natural horns.
From 1991-2002, Lawson taught at Minot State University in Minot, ND, where he taught horn, trumpet and guitar lessons, music theory and graduate research methods, and coached chamber music. From 1995-1998, Lawson was the music director and conductor of the Minot Symphony Orchestra He has served as principal horn of the Minot Symphony and as principal trumpet of the Bismarck Symphony. He was the founder and director of the Audubon Chamber Ensemble and was the director of the Ambassador Brass Quintet. As well as performing in these ensembles; he has been an active arranger.
Lawson has served on the faculties of Western Carolina University, Albion College and Lansing Community College and performed as a horn player with the Asheville Symphony (NC), Greater Lansing Symphony, Kalamazoo Symphony and Flint Symphony (MI) and the Adirondack Symphony (NY). He has maintained an active schedule of adjudication, clinics and master classes, chamber music and solo recital performances throughout his career. A highlight was performing at the International Horn Society Workshop on a recital of historical horns at the University of Oregon, in Eugene, OR in 1996.
DAVID T. PHILLlPS received the B.A. degree in Music Education and the M.A. degree in clarinet performance from Marshall University. He taught for over 30 years in the Ohio public schools, most recently in the Gallipolis School District. He is a member of the Ohio Music Education Association and Phi Beta Mu. For over twenty years, he has served as a guest conductor and adjudicator for marching and concert bands, solo and ensemble festivals, and clinics.
MS. ANN LEIGH, Coordinator of the Festival Band Week end, is Director of Recruiting Activities for the Department of Music. She holds the M.M. in ethnomusicology from Bowling Green State University of Ohio, and recently relocated to Huntington from West Palm Beach, FL.
