Description
This is an oil painting on a small wooden block, 10 x 4 cm, of the naval battle between the Confederate ironclad Merrimac (Virginia) on the left, and the Union ironclad Monitor on the right. The battle took place near Hampton Roads, Virginia, on March 9, 1862. It is referred to as the “Battle of the Ironclads.” The event is generally described as bringing about the death of the wooden warship. The battle ended indecisively, as neither could inflict heavy damage on the other. Unknown artist. Item # 2001.0703.299, 10 x 4 cm.
