Abstract

The Morgan family papers consist of business, general and family correspondence, as well as legal and financial papers. Much of the business correspondence, dating from 1840 to 1935, is concerned with John Morgan's business ventures, first as a store keeper in Shenandoah County, Virginia, and later as a farmer in Putnam Country, Virginia, now West Virginia. The general correspondence consists of letters from friends and dates from 1843 until 1900. The family correspondence is composed of letters from members of the immediate Morgan family, and includes letters from members of three generations. It is well to note here that there are three men named John Morgan; where possible distinction among the three generations has been made by the designations "Sr.," "Jr.," and "III."

Most of the legal papers are deeds and agreements concerning the acquistion of the land in Putnam Country in 1838. The financial papers comprise the bulk of the collection. These include statements, receipts, and promissory notes, and date from 1831 to 1895. Included in the collection is a small group of papers belonging to Colonel James Madison Hite Beale, Father-in-law of John Morgan Sr.

Of particular interest is the letter from Ann F. Moore to her brother describing the devastation of the Shenandoah Valley by Federal soldiers at the end of the Civil War (Bx 2, Fd. 4).
