Abstract

This collection includes artifacts related to Dr. Hatfield’s medical practice, including pharmaceutical instruments and examples of pill containers. Also included are a few items related to Dr. Hatfield’s tenure as governor, such as a gold pocket watch presented to him.

Henry Drury Hatfield was born in 1875 in Mingo County, West Virginia. He earned his first medical degree from University of Louisville and a second degree, specializing in surgery, from New York University. While practicing, Dr. Hatfield recognized the inadequate health care facilities available to southern West Virginia and lobbied the state legislature for improvements. That marked the beginning of his political career, and he was elected as the WV Senate president in 1911. The following year, he was elected as governor and worked to pass progressive legislation related to work safety and health conditions. Dr. Hatfield retired to Huntington, WV and died in 1962.
