In this opening session, Robert Ellison and Keith Francis provided a quick survey of major developments in the field of sermon studies, with a focus on projects they and other conferencegoers had been directly involved in.

At-A-Glance Bios- Presenter #1

Robert H. Ellison is Associate Professor of English and Director of the Center for Sermon Studies at Marshall University in Huntington, WV, USA. He is the lead curator of the Library of Appalachian Preaching: A Digital Repository of Sermons and co-editor (with Keith Francis) of A Companion to Preaching and the Sermon, the 20th Century, which is under contract with Brill.

Keith A. Francis is an independent scholar who holds a visiting fellowship at Oxford Brookes University. He edited, with William Gibson, the Oxford Handbook of the British Sermon, 1689-1901 (OUP 2012). Apart from his work on the sermon and preaching, his research interests include religion and evolutionary science in the nineteenth century and British Anglicanism in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. He is presently working on a biography of Samuel Wilberforce, son of William Wilberforce and Anglican bishop of the dioceses of Oxford and Winchester.
