Creating Beautiful Solutions in our Communities and Everyday Lives
Session Abstract or Summary
Are you interested in learning more about the economy and governance systems in which we live? Is it important to you to see examples of where and how local people are creating solutions that address climate change and put people and places over profits? Do you want to create beautiful solutions in your community? Come learn about a new economics and governance curriculum, a book and training project called Beautiful Solutions and of course try out some sessions and get your beautiful solutions put in the solutions gallery. This workshop will introduce this new Highlander project.
Don't come if you want to sit through a paper, panel or lecture. Only come if you are interested in an interactive, technologically savvy and fun workshop with a toolkit to take home. This is a work in progress being developed by the Highlander Center and allies, for use in local communities, and with groups and organizations who want to build a different future.

At-A-Glance Bio- Presenter #1
Elandria serves as the co-coordinator of the Education Team and is on the Organizational Leadership Team at the Highlander Center. She is staff coordinator for the Southern Grassroots Economies Project, co-Editor of Beautiful Solutions and co-leads the Governance and Economics curriculum and supports community leaders and organizers in the South and Appalachia. She serves on the Coordinating Committee or Board for the U.S. Solidarity Economy Network, the Democracy at Work Institute, the Appalachian Studies Association and the Pedagogy of the Theater of the Oppressed. She also leads popular education, organizing, anti-oppression, anti-racism, leadership development, political analysis and develops other curriculum, training s and presentations.
At-A-Glance Bio- Presenter #2
Susan Williams is co-coordinator of Highlander's education team; she has worked for over 35 years as a community organizer, a popular educator, a participatory researcher and librarian/archivist in East Tennessee. She organized with Save Our Cumberland Mountains and the Tennessee Industrial Renewal Network, and now works at the Highlander Research and Education Center in Tennessee. She has worked across many issues at Highlander and believes in the importance of everyone learning more about economics.
