Human Trafficking 101 Understanding This Epidemic on a Nationwide Scale and What is being done in Appalachia Specifically the State of West Virginia
Session Abstract or Summary
Abstract
The goal of this workshop is to help the audience gain a better understanding of what Human Trafficking is, the types of trafficking, i.e. sex and labor, how to identify it, and what to do if it is suspected. This information will be presented in a way that it is easily understood by the general public, however it will be presented from a social work and medical prospective. Included in this workshop will be statistics as it relates to gender and age across the nation, what services are being implemented, and what the response to this epidemic in West Virginia. This workshop will also offer those in attendance clarity in understanding who is at risk to fall victim to trafficking and how childhood trauma, PTSD and drug abuse are at the forefront. It will also show how the lack of services, specifically in rural areas are affecting and adding to the problem. It is the hope that those in attendance will bring this information back to their communities to start addressing this problem in Appalachia, as it’s believed that due to the extensive lack of services, there are many in desperate need.
