Session Title

Appalachia in Verse and Story: Readings from the Anthology of Appalachian Writers, Frank X Walker and Homer Hickam Volumes VI and VII

Session Abstract or Summary

The Anthology of Appalachian Writers is a yearly publication, highlighting the work of a significant Appalachian heritage writer and featuring the contemporary poetry and prose of writers of the region whose work connects in some way with the heritage writer. These Appalachian writers will be reading from the Frank X Walker and Homer Hickam volumes of the anthology, volumes VI and VII. Both volumes explore, in different ways, the diversity and cultural range of the region. “A Song for West Virginia," in particular, unpacks an array of cultural and historical allusions, while other selections from the volumes give us poetry and stories that constitute a modern and ethnically diverse region. Other volumes will be available for conference participants to enjoy: Adriana Trigiani Volume I, Silas House Volume II, Bobbie Ann Mason Volume III, Ron Rash Volume IV, and Gretchen Moran Laskas Volume V.
