Session Title

Exploring Substance Use in Appalachia: Multigenerational Conditions, Counselors and Current Interventions

Session Abstract or Summary

Trauma-informed substance use is a worldwide phenomenon. In Appalachia complex trauma prevails and presents when Appalachians enter counseling. Responding to lifelong trauma, Appalachian coping deficit includes culturally-based substance use,a concept with international generalizability.

Lecture with Powerpoint will review national research and offer Motivational Interviewing in assessment of substance use. An effective intervention paucity exists for counseling providers with self-medicated complex trauma. This presentation increases awareness of normalized trauma in Appalachia, how substance use is a symptom of innate coping deficit, that counselors need to expand their assessment acuity and can better open dialogue using Motivational Interviewing.
