Presentation #1 Title
Flat Rock Creek: A Song Cycle Heard from the Voices of the Misty Mountains
Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary
Trekking alongside the freshets, creeks, and rivers in the misty mountains, one can hear voices recanting their stories of family struggle, loss, and hope. Commitment is an inherent virtue despite the ravages of alcoholism, impossible working conditions, and a desire for a better life. These songs were birthed from the NEH Seminar “Voices from the Misty Mountains: Appalachian Culture and Literature” at Shepherd University this past summer. Valerie and Charlie Fournier spent many years as professional musicians before settling for a time in Florida to raise their two children. Now the children are grown, and the two musicians have begun to rejoin the musical community as musical storytellers. This presentation will involve a musical assemblage of original compositions, inspired by Appalachian ballads and stories, some of which served as final NEH Summer Seminar for Teachers project..
