Session Title

Bluefield, West Virginia Short Film

Session Abstract or Summary

I will be screening my short film, the as of yet untitled Bluefield, West Virginia project. The project is an experimental/documentary short that will run 15-20 minutes in length and focus on the city of Bluefield, West Virginia. The film is currently in production and is scheduled to be completed in December 2016. Sample footage, minus music and audio elements, can be found at https://vimeo.com/184212498/190896a055.

Bluefield, a city in southern West Virginia, was once a major economic and rail hub in the region. During its peak in the early to mid 20th century Bluefield was commonly referred to as "Little New York" with its thriving downtown and high rises of the time period. Since the 1970s, the city has been decimated by the steady decline of coal and the overall economic downturn of the Appalachian region. The once vibrant downtown area is vastly different from its former glory, with many of the buildings in disrepair or completely gone.

Through striking visuals and audio elements I intend to capture the tragic beauty of the city by creating a visual poem which speaks to the necessity of preserving this city and its culture. In turn, I hope to gain exposure for the city that will lead to future economic development opportunities.
