Stories of Progressivism in the Highlands: John C. Campbell’s Biography

Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary

The Progressive Era barely made it into Appalachia. John C. Campbell and the Russell Sage Foundation deserve much of the credit for what progress was made, along with the other social reformists, religious institutions, and government officials chronicled in the The Life and Work of John C. Campbell. Never before published, the biography, written by his wife Olive Dame Campbell, includes Campbell’s correspondence with denominational and educational co-workers working to improve living conditions for mountaineers in the first decades of the twentieth century.

At-A-Glance Bio- Presenter #1
