Session Title
Helping Students Uncover the Cultures, Values, and Histories they Don’t Know they Have
Session Abstract or Summary
This workshop is designed as a sharing space for teachers and others interested in the education of Appalachian students. Methods, materials, and insights into teaching Appalachian learners about their histories and cultures will be discussed, including those designed for the Berea College’s Appalachian Male Initiative.
A study of American history textbooks reveals that Appalachia and Appalachians are discussed almost exclusively at two points in time. The first is the Daniel Boone era; the second is the War on Poverty. This history presents nothing about Appalachia or Appalachians before they settled and, it seems, nothing happens between settlement and the cruel poverty that emerges generations later. Given this, it should not be surprising that Appalachian students want to leave their communities and, often, deny their ties to Appalachia. Nor is it surprising that many adopt the stereotypes perpetuated by textbooks and various forms of media.
Missing from popular textbooks are many concealed truths about the contributions Appalachians have made to American history and culture. Knowing and understanding these truths could help students see the complexity and richness of their histories and cultures. In so doing, students may gain new respect for and pride in their people, their place, and themselves.
In this session we will share, explore, and brainstorm ideas, practices, and possible next steps in addressing a fuller education in Appalachian histories and cultures for both Appalachian and non-Appalachian students.
