Human Trafficking in Appalachia
Session Abstract or Summary
Abstract:
Human trafficking is alive and well in all 50 states, in every county and every city. It is currently ranked as the second largest criminal industry with Ohio being ranked 5th in the nation for human trafficking.
This presentation will focus on what human trafficking is, how to identify and what to do if its suspected. It will also provide a historical perspective in regards to its prevalence in Appalachia, and an explanation of the differences between its existence in an urban and rural setting, and how it may or may not effect community response. Attendees will be given an overview of what is being done currently in response to this epidemic in Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia. It will also provide a comparison to how human trafficking is being handled on a national level giving insight to other programs around the country. Those in attendance will be provided an opportunity for questions at the end of the presentation.

At-A-Glance Bio- Presenter #1
Kristi Miller, MSW, LSW, CA has been working with victims of crime such as domestic violence, sexual violence and human trafficking for over 20 years. She has been Assistant Director for the Human Trafficking Collaborative of Lorain County since 2009, and is currently Director of Community and Transitional Services for Welcome House which is an agency that works with individuals with developmental disabilities. Kristi has presented on DV/SA and HT to thousands over the past 20 years and has currently also taken on the role of Adjunct Faculty at Lorain County Community College in the Department of Human Services and Social Sciences.
