Presentation #1 Title
Nature Reserves of the Ukrainian Carpathians: Prospects and Problems for Sustainable Development
Presentation #1 Abstract or Summary
This presentation addresses the issue of sustainable development in the Carpathian region through nature reserve fund conservation and development. It will first summarize the acquisition and management of the most important nature reserves in Ukrainian Carpathians. In 1940, two large state parks in the Ukrainian Carpathians were created: Black Mountain (68 thousand hectares) and Gorgany (50 thousand hectares). In 1980, the Carpathian National Nature Park was created, and in 1990, under the direction of the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve Program, the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve was established. On June 22, 1999, a Trilateral Biosphere Reserve, the "Eastern Carpathians," was approved by the government and includes the territories of three countries: Ukraine, Poland and Slovakia. There are 147 designated nature reserves in the Carpathian region, including the forest reserves "Dzhurdzhivskyy", "Sadko", "Kniazhdvir" and "Skit Manyavsky." There are six additional National Parks in Transcarpathia, including the "Synevir," “Vizhnitskyi,” "SkoleBeskydy," “Uzhansky.” "Huzulschyna" and "Galician" National Parks. In total, 415 sites are part of the state nature reserve system in Transcarpathia, which does not include numerous monuments and historical landscapes. A network of driving routes has also been established in the Ukrainian Carpathians, destinations with botanical, geologic, or geographical themes. The presentation will analyze the current management of particular nature reserves, as well as outline their problems, future development and possible augmentation.
