Abstract
During the Postwar Reconstruction Period from 1865-1877 efforts were made to rebuild the South physically, governmentally, and economically. These efforts attempted to answer the question of recovery within the South but they did not address what the "new" South would be. During the 1880's a group of Southern visionaries developed the New South Creed as a way of revolutionizing the South. Although the Creed failed on the United States as a whole it was crucial to the development of Southwest Virginia.
