Abstract
Millennials: The Mental Health Effects of Social Media and Gaming
This literature review aims to discuss the association between the usage of social media and mental health symptoms among young adults. It is predicted that mental health disorders will be highly associated with the usage of social media outlets and video gaming. It is also predicted that rates of socialization will be affected by the degree of social media utilization by young adults. The results of this literature search were as expected. Higher than normal internet and social media utilization was directly related to gender, self-reported levels of self-esteem, and socio economic status. Studies also indicate that high use of video games is associated with higher rates of aggression in children and teens. In conclusion, it has been demonstrated that addiction to social media has an impact on mental health in young adults. This topic is still new and the effects on mental health are still being investigated. The research on this topic continues to be forthcoming but this is important because it affects a large amount of the population. The technology will continue to advance and the way many people socialize will continue to change along with the changes in technology.
