Abstract
My research will focus on the earlier years of Robert C. Byrd’s life in regards to race. Specifically, I will start out by touching base with his involvement in the Klu Klux Klan, and then transition that into his involvement with the filibuster of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In his later life, Robert C. Byrd was known as a passionate progressive, but one cannot neglect the years of his life in which he supported segregation, for it is a part of history that haunts our country. Although Robert Byrd apologized throughout his life for his racial remarks and actions, excusing it does not justify it in the slightest. With this being said, one must acknowledge the area he was from and the time period in which he lived.
