Abstract

In every culture, religion is not practiced in isolation from the occupations and ideas practiced by its people. Similarly, ideas and occupations are necessarily influenced by the religions of the people in those societies. This is especially true with mathematics, since mathematics is a practice that builds upon and applies foundational ideas. In this essay, we will explore some of the foundational ideas present in the Sumerian and Greek number systems in an attempt to understand the relationship between a society’s foundational ideas and its metaphysics and theology.
