Abstract

The Tempest by William Shakespeare has been evaluated by many people in a wide variety of aspects. One important aspect of the story throughout the entirety of The Tempest is the impact of the place. There are several literature theories that are effective in critiquing the role that place plays in the story. The Tempest is a famous piece that has been examined countless times, but looking at it from a perspective of place has not been done extensively in the past. A new meaning of The Tempest can be gleaned by multi-directional evaluation of place. The most prominent theories that can assist with evaluation of place in The Tempest are eco-criticism theory, culture theory, post-colonialism, and trauma theory. All of these theories combine to fully evaluate the multi-faceted realm of place in The Tempest and give a broader view of place and the specific ways that it has an impact on the storyline. Overall, theoretical evaluation of place can allow for better understanding of a frequently analyzed text.
