Abstract

The Purpose

Organizational goals and workplace productivity are negatively impacted by communication breakdowns and conflict. Communication persistence is an important factor in reducing such breakdowns and misunderstandings. The goal of the study is to determine factors that predict an individual’s intention to persist in communication in the workplace.

Rationale:

The major predictions of the study include the following: H1: Attitudes toward communication persistence will be positively correlated with behavioral intentions to continue dialoguing, H2: Perceived social norms about communication persistence will be positively correlated with intentions to continue dialoguing, and H3: Perceived behavioral control about communication persistence will be positively correlated with intentions to continue dialoguing. The Theory of Planned Behavior is the main theory the study is framed through.

The Procedures:

The data for this study will be collected via an online questionnaire using Qualtrics with 40 questions and should take approximately 30 minutes to complete. The survey will measure attitude, social norms, perceived behavioral control, and intention of the participants regarding communication persistence in the workplace. Participants will be recruited from social media and Marshall University. An on-line consent form will be used. The data will be kept confidential and stored with the co-investigator until the end of the study when the data will be stored with the PI.

The Risks and Potential Benefits:

Identification of factors that determine communication persistence would benefit the productivity, morale, and organizational culture of the workplace. There is minimal risk for participating in the study.

Complete Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria

Participants must be at least 18 years old or older who are employed.
