Abstract
The practices of foraging, herbalism and plant medicine have a long history within communities that reside within the Appalachian Mountains. Guided by Blumer's Symbolic Interactionist perspective, we investigate the micro-aspects of society within Appalachia. I aim to explore the meanings that these practices hold within Appalachian communities. Viewing how familial and communal practices shape the meanings that are placed on and associated with the practices of foraging, herbalism, and plant medicine. Using interviews of people within Appalachian communities, viewing their own personal ideals surrounding these practices to grasp how they are viewed and how their views are constructed.
