Abstract

Miguel de Cervantes and Lope de Vega were the two most influential figures in literature of early modern Spain. Although they complemented each other very well in their work, their friendship did not last as their relationship tragically devolved into one of the most famous literary rivalries in Europe. Miguel de Cervantes is considered to be one of the greatest Spanish writers. He is best known for his novel Don Quixote which is a work that is often called the world’s first modern novel. Lope de Vega, on the other hand, was a highly esteemed playwright, poet, and novelist. Lope de Vega was also equally considered to be one of the most influential figures in the Spanish Golden Age of Baroque Literature. Lope de Vega was only second to that of Cervantes. De Vega renewed the Spanish theatre at a time when it was starting to become a mass cultural phenomenon. Cervantes envied de Vega because of the incredible volume of his life work. The clash between the two was no small issue. The goal of this paper is to explore the relationship between Miguel Cervantes and Lope de Vega, seeing how it radically changed Spanish literature for centuries to come.
