Abstract

The overarching goal of this study is to explore hypermasculinity and the gender performance of young boys in middle and high school. More specifically, this project investigates how and to what extent adolescent and teenage boys exhibit hypermasculinity and gender performance when placed in groups of similarly-aged boys. This study allows us to determine what, if anything, influences a hypermasculine ideal, if a hypermasculine ideal exists in the school setting at all, and what attitudes surrounding gender performance exist in the school. Data collection activities (i.e., observations and survey) are taking place at Collins Career and Technical Center. More specifically, surveys are being conducted at Collins Career and Technical Center on the campus with teachers of any subject. Fieldwork is being conducted in several classrooms at the school where a large groups of boys are being taught. The benefits of this research are to advance scholarship on hypermasculinity and gender performance among adolescent boys.
