Abstract
The yearly celebration of the Christmas holiday is anticipated by nearly everyone in the United States . The emotional excitement adds color to the winter months. However, a common concern among many people in the early 1970's has been commercialization of the Christmas season. The effects of commercialization on family observances are unknown because of the dearth of information about the family's financial involvement with Christmas. Most available data concerning Christmas expenditures is found in business journals and government retail-wholesale statistics . In an attempt to examine expenditure patterns of the family in the Christmas trade it becomes apparent that the influence of the family during this billion dollar season has largely open forgotten or neglected.
