Abstract

The necessity for nutrition education of the patient is becoming increasingly important in the health care system. This kind of education can aid the patient to select and practice a more desirable nutritional behavior in order to produce a favorable change in his health status. The dietitian's role in health care education is the application of nutritional knowledge to the individual situation of the patient. A dietitian must first establish rapport with the patient through verbal and non-verbal communication. He or she must be able to understand others' feelings and be warm, friendly, and put the patient at ease. The dietitian must become acquainted with the patients' usual food preparation methods in order to personalize the diet and increase the acceptance of the new diet plan. In providing nutritional care, the dietitian helps the patient to select and obtain food for the primary purpose of preservation of health and treatment of disease.
