Abstract

In January of 1937, the largest flood of record hit the Ohio and Mississippi Valleys. Lowell Thomas compared the flood of 1937 with the Great Flood of the Bible. While this exaggerates somewhat the magnitude of the disaster, the people of the Tri-State area must have felt their world was coming to an end; indeed, for the individuals killed in the deluge, their world did end. Yet, the Tri-State and the Ohio Valley survived the inundation. In this paper, the writer intends to concentrate on the effects of the flood on the cities of Ashland, Kentucky, Huntington, West Virginia and Portsmouth, Ohio. Of the three, Ashland Kentucky received the least damage but none-the-less it suffered heavily at the hands of the mighty Ohio.
