Abstract
An experiment was carried out to determine the effect of chloroform on acquisition and retention or a conditioned response in rats. The Ss were thirty-six albino rats. The procedure consisted of grouping three factors, pre-trial chloroform, post-trial chloroform, and post-trial shock vs. no post-trial shock into all possible factorial combinations. Five trial days on the apparatus were used to measure acquisition of the conditioned response and one test clay was used to measure retention of the conditioned response.
The results indicate that chloroform hindered day to day jumping off of the apparatus. This is interpreted as an inhibiting effect on performance rather than on retention.
