Abstract
Traditional medicine (the use of home remedies) has long been practiced as a necessity in more Appalachians have gained access Appalachia. Recently, to established (or modern) medicine. Unfortunately, these two types of medicine each embrace very different philosophies, and there has been little in the way of interaction between the two. The independence found among Appalachians ensures that home remedies will continue to be used, since modern medicine is often mistrusted, ignored or simply never utilized. It thus behooves medical personnel serving the Appalachian culture to better understand the spirit behind the use of home remedies in order to facilitate the overall care of patients under the ideal family practice model.
