Biographies

J.D. Parr is Associate Professor of Music at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas, where he teaches classes in woodwinds, theory, music education and directs the jazz ensemble. He holds degrees from Washburn University, Michigan State University, and the University of Kansas, where he has studied with Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr, Keith Stein, Fred Ormand, Larry Maxey, and Sidney Forrest. He has been principal clarinetist in the Topeka Symphony Orchestra since 1990, as well as a member of the Lawrence (Kansas) Chamber Orchestra and principal in the Lawrence City Band since 1979. From 1985 through 2000, Dr. Parr directed Marshall's Civic Band of Topeka, one of the nation's oldest continually performing community bands. During the summer, Dr. Parr teaches and performs at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp near Muskegon, Michigan, where he plays principal in their Festival Band and Orchestra and has been a featured soloist on several occasions. He regularly receives invitations to serve as guest artist, clinician, or adjudicator with high school bands throughout Kansas and Missouri.

When Canadian Saxophonist Gordon Towell's not teaching jazz in a Morehead State University classroom, he's likely to be performing with the Vince DiMartino/MilesOsland Jazz Orchestra (DOJO), the Kentucky Jazz Repertory Orchestra, Jerry Conrad's Rhythm and Brass, and Jay Flippin. Towell, who holds a BEd in music education from the University of Alberta, an MM in jazz studies from Indiana University and a DME with a cognate in jazz studies from the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, has shared his expertise with students at the University of Cincinnati, Indiana University, Keyano College, Grant MacEwan College, and numerous public schools. As Associate Professor of Music in jazz studies and music education at Morehead, Towell directs two jazz bands and several jazz combos, teaches jazz history and improvisation, and prepares student teachers for the classroom. He also finds time to adjudicate, guest solo and perform with national and international artists, and conduct throughout Canada and the U.S. His saxophone performance can be heard on Sketch Pad, Ask Me Now, Blue Duck Suit, and Still Friends which are all available through ballparkrecords.com, cdbaby.com, and ejazzlines.com. Gordon is a recipient of the 2001 Morehead State University's Distinguished Creative Productions Award.
