Guest Artists
Mary Ann Nelson, a Charleston native, has been actively performing with the West Virginia Symphony, Huntington Symphony, and Ohio Valley Symphony over the past 2 years. In 2001, she completed her BM in Flute Performance and BME in Music Education at Ohio State University, studying flute with Katherine Borst Jones. Ms. Nelson was selected as the Most Outstanding Graduate in Music Performance at Ohio State that same year. Upon graduation, Ms. Nelson continued her studies as a Graduate Assistant at West Virginia University, studying with Joyce Catalfano, completing her MM in Flute Performance in 2003. Ms. Nelson won several competitions while in college, including the Ohio State University Concerto Competition, the National Flute Association Masterclass Competition, and the Greater Cleveland Flute Society Competition. She has performed in many masterclasses, including those taught by Robert Willoughby, William Bennett, Marina Picinnini, Julius Baker, Paula Robison, Jeanne Baxtresser, and Jeffrey Khaner. Prior to beginning college, Ms. Nelson studied with June Warhoftig of Charleston, WV. She resides in Charleston with her husband Nathan.
Elizabeth Ford completed an MM in musicology from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University in 2005, where she studied eighteenth century French instrumental methods and was a traverso student of Colin St. Martin. She holds a BA in music and philosophy from West Virginia Wesleyan College, where she published in many philosophy journals and was the winner of the 2001 WVMTNA woodwind competition. Her previous flute teachers have included Karen Winter, Linda Wolfersheim, Mary Ann Nelson and David Wright. In her final year at Wesleyan, while agonizing over what she was to do with her life, Elizabeth discovered a flute maker living in the next town. This discovery helped to move her towards music history and away from law. With Kateri Chambers, she performs as part of the touring semi-staged concept concert La Folie des Moutons, which premiered in September to great acclaim. Currently between schools, Elizabeth spends much of her time thinking great thoughts and teaching the occasional modem flute lesson.
