Hasan Ferit Alnar (1906-1978)
Alnar, a Turkish composer and conductor, first studied music with his mother. He showed an early talent for playing the qӓnün and composition. At 16 he composed a musical play in traditional Turkish monophonic style. In 1927 he went to the Vienna Academy of Music and studied composition with Joseph Marx and conducting with Oswald Kabasta. He returned to Turkey in 1932, was appointed conductor to the Istanbul City Theatre Orchestra and taught history of music at the Istanbul Conservatory. In 1936 he became assistant conductor of the Ankara Presidential SO, taught piano at the State Conservatory and was an assistant to Carl Abert at the Ankara State Opera. In 1946 he was appointed conductor of the Presidential PO and held the post until 1952, when he left because of a nervous breakdown, though he continued to teach at the conservatory and to appear as guest conductor in Ankara and with the Vienna SO and the Stuttgart RSO. One of the Turkish Five, Alnar was attracted to the rhythmic and melodic patterns of Turkish monophonic music.
Ekrem Zeki Ün ((1910-1987)
A Turkish composer, violinist and conductor, Ün studied the violin with Line Talluel, Marcel Chailley and Jacques Thibaud and harmony with L. Laurant and Alexandre Cellier at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris. He studied composition with Dandelot. His compositional style evolved throughout his career. His impressionistic early compositions reflect his education in Paris; later be was influenced by the philosophy of Henri Bergson and began to incorporate the melodic and rhythmic modal systems of Turkish traditional music. While Ün considered his works written after 1965 to be images of Eastern mysticism, his earlier compositions often cultivated national themes, as in his symphonic poem Yurdum ( 'My Country'). Ün also wrote several books on music education in Turkey.
Musa Göçmen (b. 1974)
A young classical and new age composer from Turkey, Göçmen's works are published by DMC Productions. He composes especially for chorus, and has dedicated works to the State Opera and Ballet in Ankara, Antalya and Mersin/Turkey. His other works include film music, arrangements of Turkish Folk Songs for full orchestra, and pieces for chamber orchestra and string ensembles.
