Oil painting on board by Michael J. Burns, entitled: “Shell Bursting on the Deck of the Alabama.” It depicts a scene from the battle between the Confederate warship Alabama and the Union warship Kearsarge, which took place June 19, 1864, off Cherbourg, France, which resulted in the sinking of the Alabama. The artwork was completed in 1886 and first appeared in the “Century Magazine,” Vol. XXXI, No. 6, April, 1886. Item # 2006.0703.262, 47 x 36 cm.
