Abstract

During the month of May 2018, I spent my days exploring Kathmandu and hiking for 21 days along the Everest Base Camp Trek and back with my fiancée’, a local guide, and a porter. It was an eye-opening experience that exposed me to the main features of a culture I was not familiar with and allowed me to reflect on my desire to escape the “western world” to a more remote and wild place. Upon returning to Marshall University, my fiancée and I took part in an independent study with Dr. Puspa Damai, a Professor in the English Dept. and a Kathmandu native. The title of the class was “Nepal Through the Western Eyes”, as our goal was to investigate how western culture attempts to portray Nepal in literature and art and compare it to our experience. In this paper, I chose to compare my experience in Nepal by contrasting it with selected song lyrics across diverse genres and artists that have touched on the theme of Nepal and the Himalayas.
