Abstract

The prediction of academic success in institutions of higher learning is an important problem for those persons concerned with admission requirements and placement programs. Predictions of academic success also facilitate readmission procedures and are useful to counselors working with college or prospective college students.

At Marshall University, the American College Test (ACT) has been used as a measure of academic success. The test was developed to make procedures of admissions, guidance, placement and scholarship appointments more efficient. The American College Test battery consists of four tests: English Usage Test, Mathematics Usage Test, Social Studies Reading Test, and Natural Sciences Reading Test. The mean of the scores for each of the four tests is the composite score.. Of the five possible scores, the composite score on the ACT has been reported to be the best single predictor of freshman success in college.
