Abstract
Of the three significant criminal organizations that came out of Southern Italy in the 1800’s, the most prominent and powerful today which is based out of the region of Calabria is often referred to as the Calabrian Mafia or the Ndrangheta. This criminal organization is able to use power and secrecy more effectively than the other two criminal organizations that came out of Italy during this time. This paper is meant to show the reasons the Calabrian Mafia was able to implement power so effectively, using Michele Foucault’s book Discipline and Punish. In this book he shows how discipline and punishment has changed throughout the ages from a spectacle form of punishment to a technical explicit type of discipline. Both these forms are pertinent for the Calabrian Mafia to be so successful and maintain power.
